Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger Point Therapy is a hands-on treatment technique that targets tight, tender areas in muscles, commonly known as “knots”, to relieve pain and improve function throughout the body. Also called Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy or Trigger Point Massage, this approach is used to assess and treat specific points of tension that may be causing pain locally or radiating discomfort to other parts of the body.

Trigger Point Therapy

What Are Trigger Points?

Trigger points are hypersensitive spots within muscle tissue that can form as a result of injury, overuse, stress, or poor posture. These points often feel like small nodules or tight bands within the muscle and can be painful when pressed.

There are two main types of trigger points:

  1. Active Trigger Points: These cause localized or referred pain even without stimulation. Applying pressure to these points can intensify the discomfort and refer pain to another area of the body.
  2. Latent Trigger Points: These do not cause spontaneous pain but can produce tenderness or discomfort when compressed. While less disruptive, they still impair movement and flexibility.

Diagnosis and Treatment

At Sharma Rehabilitation Services, our trained specialists use Trigger Point Therapy to identify and deactivate trigger points that may be contributing to your pain. Using gentle palpation techniques, we assess muscle texture and tension beneath the surface of the skin to locate these sensitive areas.

Once identified, we apply direct, sustained pressure to the trigger point. This pressure helps release the knot, restore normal blood flow, and relax the surrounding muscle fibers. The technique may also produce a localized twitch response—an involuntary contraction of the muscle fibers surrounding the trigger point. This response is distinct from a muscle spasm and is considered a sign that the therapy is targeting the correct area.

Trigger Point Therapy is commonly used to treat:

  • Chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain
  • Repetitive strain injuries
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sports-related injuries
  • Limited range of motion

By addressing these tight muscle knots, we can help relieve pain at the source rather than simply masking symptoms.

Types of Trigger Points

Understanding the different categories of trigger points allows for more precise treatment. These include:

  1. Central Trigger Points: Located in the center of a muscle belly, often where motor nerves enter the muscle.
  2. Attachment Trigger Points: Found near where the muscle attaches to the bone, commonly under stress due to repetitive strain.
  3. Active Trigger Points: Cause spontaneous pain and referred pain patterns.
  4. Latent Trigger Points: Only painful when compressed, but still contribute to stiffness and weakness.
  5. Satellite Trigger Points: Develop in response to stress from other active trigger points nearby.
  6. Ligamentous Trigger Points: Occur in connective tissues such as ligaments or joint capsules.
  7. Diffuse Trigger Points: Widespread tender points, often associated with systemic pain conditions.

Reclaim Comfort and Movement

Unresolved trigger points can limit movement, drain your energy, and contribute to chronic pain conditions. At Sharma Rehabilitation Services, our skilled therapists use evidence-informed Trigger Point Therapy to release muscle tension, reduce referred pain, and restore functional mobility.
